No iPhones found! - 2008/01/01 10:38Happy New Year !
Syphone looks great -all I have to do is get past the 'No iPhones found!' window. I have the latest 10.5.1 on my iMac & latest update on my iPhone. Sometimes the latest version of everything is not always a good thing with 'beta', Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/01/01 10:55Happy New Year!
First, you must perform a sync of the iPhone with iTunes. Then disconnect the iPhone, and launch Syphone. The SMS text messages should show up. If they do not, open the Console application, and look for iTunes sync errors, a problem that Apple must fix.
The default setting for the Syphone preferences is to allow the “Helper App” (the SMSDaemon) to load. In most cases, that checkbox should be checked. A few people have found, for reasons not yet clear to me, that unchecking is preferable.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/03/24 14:51Use the Console application, located in /Applications/Utilities, to chcck the system log and the console log for iTunes sync errors. The text to look for is an error following “com.apple.iTunes.”
Some users have reported that downloading the latest version of iTunes solves the problem. The iPhone manual explains how to perform the sync with iTunes.MicroMat Inc Makers of TechTool

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/04/17 19:37using your method worked fine for me. I think the guy up top is not disconnecting the iphone and leaving it disconnected. The sync is what downloads the SMS to the computer... not having the phone connected.
thanks

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/04/19 10:15Sync iPhone with iTunes; disconnect iPhone; launch Syphone; open Syphone PREFERENCES; uncheck "Run helper app in the background" and dismiss the PREFERENCES; ... that's what worked for me.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/04/21 09:22"Sync iPhone with iTunes; disconnect iPhone; launch Syphone; open Syphone PREFERENCES; uncheck "Run helper app in the background" and dismiss the PREFERENCES;" and then to this I'd add (since this alone didn't work for me) to restart the computer and zap the Pram (restart holding the Command, Option and P and R keys simultaneously for several "rounds") and then it worked like magic.
I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to download an entire relationship of texts in one convenient and attractive PDF. Very nice program - Thanks!

I have not seen any other reports of it being necessary to reset the PRAM.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/05/25 21:09I had the same problem - no messages appeared after following the instructions above. A last sync date was listed, but no iPhone was found. I have sync errors listed in the console. I unchecked the run in background preference, unplugged my iPhone, and quit Syphone. Then I reopened the app and my messages are now listed.
My GF synced her iPhone, left the iPhone plugged in, installed Syphone into the application folder, and opened it. All her messages were listed without needing to unchecked the preferences option. She's on a Macbook with 10.5.2, I'm on a Macbook Pro with 10.5.2 - both iPhones are 8GB versions.
Thank you for the nice application!

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/06/12 09:19I was having the same probs listed at the top ('no iPhones found' etc) and syncing/disconnecting didn't seem to work - until I followed this:
"Sync iPhone with iTunes; disconnect iPhone; launch Syphone; open Syphone PREFERENCES; uncheck "Run helper app in the background" and dismiss the PREFERENCES;"
As soon as I unchecked 'run helper app' in the Prefs, the SMS started updating. Excellent! Only problem is now, I have a LOT of SMS to be updated and the Dismiss button has been greyed out for over 5 minutes...
I'm gonna have a LOT of messages to go through I think. I didn't realise it updated ALL SMS messages...I only want to save the ones currently on my iPhone!! Maybe that's something Micromat should think of for the full release - allowing for a quick backup of only the ones currently on the iPhone, and thus the ones I actually intentionally kept?

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/06/12 11:35Thanks for your suggestion.
In case you are puzzled about what you find in your Syphone database, keep in mind that it is a cumulative backup of the SMS messages that are in the snapshot backup of the iPhone that is made by iTunes.
The snapshot is not a cumulative backup, and is completely replaced each time you sync your iPhone with iTunes.
The current version of Syphone never interacts directly with the iPhone itself.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/06/27 05:50So what does Syncing the iPhone with iTunes do exactly? I have an iPhone that I need to transfer the text messages from but I don't want it to download the contents of my Library nor do I want the contents of the iPhone to change. Is that possible? Thanks.

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/06/27 11:13The sync performed by iTunes makes a backup of the contents of the iPhone.
Each time you perform the sync, the previous backup is completely replaced. The intention is to allow you to restore the entire contents of the iPhone should they become corrupted on the phone. It is a good feature, and I urge you to use it without attempting to modify the results.MicroMat Inc Makers of TechTool

Sadly, I am experiencing the same problems that were listed previously. I have followed the steps below exactly, and still, Syphone is not showing any SMS messages and still says "no iphones found". Not sure how relevant it is, but it does not list my name nor number -- but my roommates name & number (her Mac).
Is there anything else I can do? I'm at a loss right now...
Thanks!

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/07/14 03:30I can only suggest that you read all the tips in this thread. I do not know why some of them were necessary for the people who reported them, or why they worked.
The name and number probably come from the current user account. If you are going to use your roommate’s computer, you should have your own account on it.

Here's what was happening. I was following the steps exactly.... however, this one time, I noticed that when syncing to iTunes at the top it said "backing up". For some reason, iTunes was not backing up my phone while syncing. I don't know why it suddenly decided to back up the phone, but it did. After that, my text messages finally appeared. Yay!
One more question -- do you know if there will be a windows version of the syphone available in the near future?
It's a great application! Thrilled I was able to get it to work.
Thank you!

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/07/24 13:16Had same problem with Itunes 7.7 and iphone 3G Problem is that itunes is not backing up the phone even if it's doing a sync....
On the new itunes 7.7 right click on the phone icon on the left window of itunes (control + right click for mac) and you will be given a menu that allow you to perform a manual backup of the phone.
This will then allow the application to find the backup o your phone. Also had to go to preferences and uncheck the top check box as stated in other replies.
Thanks a bunch

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/07/24 14:39Grendon,
Thanks for posting a very useful tip.
In general, people are not having a problem with using Syphone 0.99b11 with iTunes 7.7, iPhone software 2.0, or with the new 3G iPhone. The one universal problem is with group messages, a feature that did not exist when this version of Syphone was written.MicroMat Inc Makers of TechTool

Re:No iPhones found! - 2008/08/09 12:22I tried all the above a few times and it was the advice from paulski that made the difference: reinstalling from dmg.
Thanks for this wonderful app. It's the first time that I've been able to backup SMS to a computer, and I'm delighted to be abel to do this. Thank you.

Re: No iPhones found! + does not update SMS - 2008/08/14 08:18hello,
i've read all comments on SyPhone not recognizing iPhone SMSs + not updating latest SMSs, and used ALL suggestions (iTunes sync / disconnect iPhone / relaunch SyPhone / check + uncheck Syphone Pref "Run helper app" / restart Mac / resinstall SyPhone etc.), but it STILL does NOT work for me?!
questions to Micromat & member suggestions: 1) what's wrong, what can you suggest?
2) why is SyPhone 0.99b11 not updated since 22Oct'07?! it's been 10 months without any update/upgrade?! what's wrong, is Micromat no longer supporting this app or will it seize to exist?! otherwise, when will it reach 1.0 & is Micromat going to add new features or stop at 1.0?
3) what's the best alternative app if Micromat doesn't deal with its software issues or only has excuses of why it doesn't work - i.e. see iPhoneView, which functions well & does more than SyPhone & updates SMSs without glitches, yet does not keep SyPhone's iPhone-like color-glossy formatting...
4) why is Micromat's Syphone Forum often not available?!

Re: No iPhones found! + does not update SMS - 2008/08/14 13:08I regret that I do not have any additional suggestions beyond what has already been posted in these forums. The newest tip is to reinstall after downloading the dmg file again.
Syphone 0.99b11 is the first public beta of a free utility. It works for the vast majority of users, with the exception of the group messages feature, which was added to the iPhone after Syphone was released.
The developer of Syphone is currently working on TechTool Pro 5, a major revision of the company's flagship product. We expect to resume development of Syphone after TechTool Pro 5 ships, later this summer. Your patience is appreciated.
I am not familiar with other utilities that perform the same function.
The forum is essentially not available while it is being backed up, a process that typically takes about two to three hours.

I can confirm that Syphone is working well for me too. I am under 10.5.5, iphone 3g os 2.1 and unchecked 'run helper app' in the Prefs. I restart Mac immediately after and reconnect Iphone to Itunes 8.
Congratulations for this little but wonderful application !
